Construction Begins on the New Málaga Hospital: What You Need to Know

The long-awaited construction of the Nuevo Hospital de Málaga has now officially begun, and marks a giant leap forward for the healthcare system in the Costa del Sol. It is located on the site of the existing Hospital Civil de Málaga, and is set to greatly expand the city’s medical capacity by 2032. With an investment of roughly €600 million approved by the Junta de Andalucía, the hospital will help address Málaga’s long-standing shortage of hospital beds and specialist services.

Málaga has one of the most strained public healthcare systems in Andalusia. Current facilities lack the capacity to meet the needs of its growing population and increased tourist amounts. The Junta de Andalucía has chosen Málaga as the strategic location due to its regional importance, central location, and pressing healthcare demands.

The new hospital will be built on the grounds of the existing Hospital Civil, which will be demolished to make room for the new structure. The construction is planned in phases to minimize disruption to healthcare services. Initially, certain non-essential buildings and facilities on the Hospital Civil site will be relocated. This phased approach allows for parts of the old hospital to remain functional while construction progresses on other sections of the site.

The new hospital in Málaga will have 815 rooms, 80 ICU beds, 48 operating theatres, and a modern emergency department, and will become one of the most advanced in southern Spain. It will also include 158 outpatient consultation rooms, 38 nursing consultation areas, and dedicated spaces for medical research and a teaching centre.

The construction follows a mixed model, combining public investment for the hospital itself, and a concession for the development and operation of a large parking infrastructure. The parking project will include more than 1,700 spaces, and is expected to save the government €79 million through private investment and operational management.

The total construction timeline is just over six years and is divided into two main phases:

Phase 1: Build a multi-level parking structure (7 levels above ground and 3 below).
Phase 2: Construct the hospital (11 floors above ground, 4 below).

Temporary parking with 650 spaces will be provided during Phase 1. The hospital is expected to be completed and operational by mid-2032.

While some temporary disruptions are expected during the demolition and construction of the new hospital, essential healthcare services will continue with minimal interruption. Temporary infrastructure and careful planning aim to avoid significant service loss.

The hospital will not only improve access to public healthcare in Málaga but also boost the local economy. The project will generate thousands of jobs during the construction phase and provide long-term employment for medical professionals, administrators, and support staff.

Public transport access is expected to improve, and future connections with bus or metro lines are being discussed. The central location ensures accessibility for patients across the province.
