Tucked high into the rocky cliffs of the mythical Cabeçó d’Or peak near El Campello, the Canelobre Caves (or Cuevas del Canelobre in Spanish) are one of the most fascinating natural attractions in the Alicante Province.

Formed around 150 million years ago, and 690 metres above sea level, the cave’s massive central chamber (often compared to a Gaudi designed cathedral) soars up to 70 meters high, making it one of the tallest caves in Spain. The highlight is the 25-meter stalagmite shaped like a candelabra, giving the cave its name in Valencian: Canelobre.

But it’s not just the size or age that makes this place remarkable. Inside, you’ll find geological formations resembling jellyfish, a lion, a palm tree, a gnome, and even a baby elephant. Some shapes strikingly resemble Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, enhanced by dramatic lighting that creates a magical atmosphere.

How to Get to the Canelobre Caves from Alicante

The caves are located in the charming town of Busot, just 23 km from Alicante.

By car: Take the CV-776 and follow signs to the dedicated visitor parking lot.
By public transport: Take bus line C-51, which drops you about a 5-minute walk from the entrance.

The last guided tour of the day is at 4:10 PM, so plan accordingly.

You enter the cave through a 40-meter-long tunnel. The temperature inside stays a cool 17°C year-round, so bring a light jacket. The guided tour lasts about 40–45 minutes, with four key stops that explain the cave’s formation, history, and fascinating features. Tours are available in Spanish and English, and the guides are happy to repeat information in both.

Visitors often say the narrow staircase leading into the cave can feel a bit claustrophobic, and especially on the way back up, but the views and the experience are well worth the effort.

An Underground Concert Hall

Thanks to its excellent acoustics, the Canelobre Caves host musical performances throughout the year. During concerts, up to 250 people can be seated in the main chamber, transforming the cave into one of the most unique concert venues in Spain.

History and Legends of the Caves

Discovered by the Moors, the caves were later used during the Spanish Civil War as a secret aircraft engine repair workshop. A portion of the cave was expanded for this purpose, unfortunately damaging some of the natural formations.

Local legends tell of hidden treasures left by fleeing Moors and the tale of Uncle Roc, a farmer who set off in search of buried gold, and then mysteriously returned months later, richer than ever.

Are the Caves Suitable for Families?

Yes, but keep in mind that strollers are not practical inside due to narrow walkways and stairs.

If you like, you can enjoy a stroll through Busot village, known for its Moorish castle, the Church of San Lorenzo Mártir, and the Ermita de San Vicente. Or explore hiking and climbing routes in the Cabeçó d’Or, especially the PR-CV2 trail. The area offers stunning cycling routes, and the nearby Jijona (14 km) is famous for its turrón (nougat) and charming old town.
